Canonical correlations among chemical, physical and morphological characteristics of Xaraés palisadegrass under rotational grazing Scientia Agricola
Nave,Renata La Guardia; Pedreira,Carlos Guilherme Silveira; Lima,César Gonçalves de.
In forage evaluation experiments, the assessment of adaptive and productive characteristics of genotypes is generally prioritized over qualitative responses such as nutritive value and voluntary intake. Methods that are capable of characterizing forage quality through the physical resistance to degradation have been proposed, including grinding resistance and shearing resistance. Canonical correlations establish a multivariate approach associating multiple variables depicting inter-relations studies between groups of dependent and independent variables. The objective of this research was to assess the degree of association among groups of quality-related responses of grazed Xaraés palisadegrass forage using canonical correlations among morphological,...

Determing Higher Fatty Acid Levels in Plant Materials NWISRL
Mayland, H.F..
The higher fatty acids (HFA) are important plant constituents that are implicated in the grass tetany hazard in livestock. A method is given whereby a technician can analyze 12 forage samples daily for HFA content. The method consists of saponifying the plant material in ethanol and KOH and extracting the subsequently acidified HFA with petroleum ether. The petroleum ether phase is evaporated and the HFA residue is dissolved in ethanol and then titrated with standardized isobutanolic KOH in the absence of Oxygen by using an Nitrogen atmosphere. A standard plant sample, analyzed over a 37-day period, had a mean of 136 mmol H+kg ± 4.5, where 0.1 mmol H+ℓ palmitic standard was determined with an accuracy of 99 ± 1.9%.

Forage sorghum-legumes intercropping: effect on growth, yields, nutritional quality and economic returns Bragantia
Iqbal,Muhammad Aamir; Hamid,Abdul; Ahmad,Tanvir; Siddiqui,Muzammil Hussain; Hussain,Imtiaz; Ali,Sajid; Ali,Anser; Ahmad,Zahoor.
ABSTRACT Cereal-legumes intercropping is among the most economical and effective agronomic strategies to boost forage biomass production, nutritional quality and monetary returns. This review synthesizes the research findings on how intercropping affects productivity, quality, competitiveness and economic viability of sorghum-legumes mixed, row and strip intercropping systems under varied pedo-climatic conditions. Though component crops show yield reductions in row (additive and row-replacement series), mixed (seed blended crops) and strip intercropping systems, in general overall productivity per unit land area increases to a great extent. The significantly higher resource capturing with better utilization efficacy by intercrops in temporal and spatial...

Lotus tenuis Seedling Establishment and Biomass Production in Flooding Pampa Grasslands (Buenos Aires , Argentina) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Vignolio,Osvaldo R; Fernández,Osvaldo N.
Biomass and plant density of Lotus tenuis Waldst. & Kit. ex Willd. have been reported in decreasing in grasslands and pastures. Our objective was to determine if L. tenuis biomass and plant density can be increased in grassland through seed addition. Two separated experiments under cattle grazing exclusion were conducted in three paddocks of a Flooding Pampa grassland. The first experiment was from autumn 2004 to autumn 2006 and the second from autumn 2005 to autumn 2007. Different L. tenuis seed additions (0, 57, 229, 917 and 1833 seeds m-²) were broadcast into experimental plots. In the second experiment, besides seed additions there was a reseeding of approximately 900 seed m-² from seed rain produced by plants of grassland. Seed density...

Performance and carcass characteristics of beef cattle fed with ammoniated marandugrass hay R. Bras. Zootec.
Roth,Marcella de Toledo Piza; Resende,Flávio Dutra de; Reis,Ricardo Andrade; Siqueira,Gustavo Rezende; Faria,Marcelo Henrique de; Berchielli,Telma Teresinha.
This trial was conducted aiming to evaluate the effects of Brachiaria brizantha vegetative seed harvest residues hay treated with anhydrous ammonia (NH3) or urea, and protein sources on the steers performance, and carcass quality. Twenty-four male beef cattle were (12 F1 Nellore X Aberdeen Angus and 12 F1 Nellore X Red Angus), distributed in four treatments, with six replications. Animal crossbreed type and initial body weight were considered blocks. The diets were: Untreated hay supplemented with non-protein nitrogen (UHNPN); untreated hay supplemented with cottonseed meal (UHCM), hay treated with 5% urea (HTU), hay treated with 3% anhydrous ammonia (HTA) of DM%. Diets were formulated to be isoproteic and isoenergetic. The initial body weight (kg), daily...

Use of Near Infrared Reflectance (NIR) Spectroscopy to Predict Chemical Composition of Forages in Broad-Based Calibration Models Agricultura Técnica
Garcia,Jaime; Cozzolino,Daniel.
The objective of the study was to evaluate the potential of near infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy as a rapid method to predict the chemical composition of forage in broad-based calibration models. In total, 650 samples representing a wide range of chemical characteristics, phenological states and origins were scanned in an NIR instrument. The coefficient of determination in calibration (R²) and standard error in cross validation (SECV) for the NIR calibration models were as follows: dry matter 0.95 (SECV: 0.7%), crude protein 0.98 (SECV: 0.98%), ash 0.90 (SECV: 0.99%), in vitro organic matter digestibility 0.90 (SECV: 3.6%), acid detergent fiber 0.95 (SECV: 2.0%) and neutral detergent fiber 0.86 (SECV: 5.4%) on a dry matter basis. The results...

Water stress and forage production in Tetrachne dregei Nees, Panicum coloratum L. and Eragrostis curvula (Schrad) Nees Phyton
Ruiz,MA; Golberg,AD; Martínez,O.
Tetrachne dregei, Panicum coloratum and Eragrostis curvula are perennial forage C4 grasses, introduced from South Africa to the pampean semiarid region. This work was carried out to compare water stress tolerance; forage production and quality of T. dregei, P. coloratum and E. curvula. Studies were conducted under greenhouse and field conditions. In the greenhouse, watering was stopped after eighty one days of plant emergency in the water stress treatment. Water potential (ψ), stomatal resistance (SR) and shoot and root weights were evaluated. Under water stress, ψ diminished earlier and SR increases were higher in P. coloratum than in T. dregei and E. curvula. Plant survival in T. dregei and E. curvula was higher than that of P....
